Description
Culzean (pronounced Cull ane) Castle (dated from the 1300's) is a magnificent building situated on the Ayrshire coast. The current castle is a famous romantic creation by the Scottish architect Robert Adam (1772-1790) designed for the Earl of Cassillis, David Kennedy. The top floor of the castle was gifted to General Dwight D. Eisenhower by the 5th Marquis of Ailsa as a thank you for his role in commanding Scottish troops during World War II. This gift was a gesture of gratitude from the Scottish people to America for Eisenhower's leadership.
